I’m sure we’ve all been enjoying the awesome Christmas decorations displayed at 9401 Covedale by Tony Hill and family. His whimsical display recalling the story of the Grinch has delighted the adults as well as all the children.

I’m sorry to report that our neighborhood seems to have a REAL Grinch in our midst! During the early morning hours of December 18, someone stole their Grinch character and the Welcome to Whoville sign. The ladder used in the display was destroyed along with lights that were attached.

Tony and his family were very disappointed that someone would ruin a display which many neighbors and passersby have complimented; which has brought joy to many children.

If you have any information about this vandalism, or if you have experienced any similar incidents, please provide all the information you can to the police. It would also be helpful to your neighbors to let us know here at the website, so that we can let all the neighborhood know what’s going on.

Louise Snyder has informed us of a black male driving a jeep, sitting and watching the children at the bus stop at Covedale and Wishing Well. He has also been seen opening mailboxes around the neighborhood. A high-school senior told her mother this person made her very nervous. The police have been called.

Please be alert for this person in the neighborhood, and call 911 IMMEDIATELY if you see any suspicious behavior.

By now I’m sure everyone is wondering about the recent fire at 9234 Covedale Drive. What I can tell you about it is that the fire started in and was mostly contained within the utility room which opens to the back yard, and was most likely an electrical fire originating in the breaker box. Other volatile materials stored there may have exacerbated the damage.

Although there was little direct fire damage beyond the utility room, there is extensive smoke damage. Quite a lot of cleanup will be required.

Someone in the family will be working at the house most every day. I know it would be most appreciated if anyone in the neighborhood can stop by and simply ask “How can I help?”

Dave and Judy have requested all block captains to meet at their home on November 20 at 3:00 pm (please note the time change!). This will be a brief meeting, primarily for the purpose of voting for a change in the position of CHAIRMAN of the Sardis Woods Neighborhood Watch Association. ALL block captains, please plan to attend this short meeting and cast your vote!

The Matthews Library is looking for adult volunteers. If you are interested in giving a few hours of your time to the library please contact Nancy Granzen at 704-416-5000 or stop by the branch for an application. Currently there are over 100 volunteers who work monthly at the Matthews branch. Without volunteers the library would not be open five days a week.

The Town of Matthews will collect your leaves. Leaves and grass clippings must be bagged in clear bags or other bags left open so the driver can see the contents. Bags must weigh less than 50 pounds each, with a 20 bag limit per week. (Drivers can spend no more than 20 minutes per home collecting yard waste) Branches must be cut in lengths of six feet or less and can be no larger than five inches in diameter. Stack limbs in small enough piles that an individual is able to handle. Do not leave bagged yard waste or limbs and branches on the sidewalk or in the street.

Most roads in our neighborhoods are built with storm drains to remove water from the roadways and carry the water to a nearby stream or creek.  When the storm drains are blocked, the water stays on the street and causes street flooding. What can block the drains? Twigs, grass clippings, and leaves.

How can you help? Maintain a drain. Adopt the drain nearest your home. If you see debris on the storm drain, pick it up while completing your other yard care chores. This simple action will help prevent clogs and pollution in local creeks.

A Sardis Woods all-neighborhood meeting will be held 7 PM, Thursday, October 13, 2011, at the East Baptist Church on Monroe Road (next to East Meck HS).  After a brief fellowship time, a Charlotte police officer will be on hand to address problems and concerns that SW residents might have.

We’re requesting that EVERY HOME in Sardis Woods fly the American flag on September 11. Please do this to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

THANKS for your participation!!!

All block captains are requested to meet at the home of Dave and Judy Clark on Sunday, September 11 at 4:00 pm.
