The street light project is complete. Some block captains reported that some lights have not been turned on, and some lights which were expected per the original plan have not been installed. Block captains are requested to get addresses for these lights to Dave Clark, and he will ask Duke Power about these lights.
A big Sardis Woods THANKS to Russ and Carolyn Ford, for coordinating our National Night Out celebration this year. This was a very successful event, but not as well attended as we would have liked. We believe this is primarily due to the heat on that date. Several ideas were discussed for changes to the event next year, and possible alternative events.
Debra Reed suggested that the event should be made more competitive, joining in a national competition based on attendance and publicity. Several others suggested having smaller block-level events on that date, sponsored and coordinated by the individual block captains, with an all-neighborhood pot-luck meal associated with one of our semi-annual all-neighborhood meetings. Robin Sharpe volunteered to coordinate such a gathering for our Spring 2008 meeting.
Our Community Watch sign at the east end of Covedale was vandalized about three weeks ago. Witnesses report that the damage was done by neighborhood teens living on Covedale. These same teens are reported to have been involved in other acts of vandalism within the neighborhood, and involved in disrupting traffic flow on Covedale. Neighbors are reminded to call 911 whenever they witness such activities.
The Landscaping committee is off to a good start, having had eight people sign up to help at the National Night Out, and $310 donated to support the landscaping around our entrance signs. A large donation was made by Center City Realty -- THANKS!!! One meeting has been held, and a neighbor (a professional paitner) has volunteered to re-paint the neighborhood entrance signs.
If you would like some of the monkey grass currently surrounding these entrance signs for use on your own property, please go get some before September 21. On that date, the Landscape committee will remove the remainder of the monkey grass and begin replacing it with other plants and flowers.
Dave and Judy are hosting a Chili Supper for block captains and prospective block captains on Sunday, October 21 at 5:00 pm. They are providing the chili, and requesting block captains to bring slaw, garnishes, crackers, corn bread, drinks and desserts. Most important, however, is to identify and bring someone who would like to know more about being a block captain.
A question was asked by one block captain on behalf of a resident in his area. This resident was told that no digging would be required for the street light project in their yard, and consequently these neighbors did not mark their invisible fence. Duke Power found, however, that it was necessary to trench in a power line, and the invisible fence was damaged. The question was asked whether SWNA would pay for repairs to the invisible fence. The answer was that the association does not have funds available for this purpose, and had already determined that individual homeowners would be responsible for their own repairs. The neighbor is advised to contact Duke Power for possible assistance with this repair.
A question was asked about new blue markings on some of the streets. The answer was that these marks indicate the location of water supply lines, which are being maked in conjuction with a Duke Power project to replace power feed lines in the neighborhood. The existing power feed lines have reached the end of their useful life, and are being replaced as a routine system maintenance procedure.
