Block Captains Meeting, Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Construction on the road humps for Sunnywood Lane will begin in August.

Lists of email contacts are available from Judy.

The latest edition of our Woods Watch was released on June 14. A copy is available from our website.

We have an opportunity to obtain matching grant funds from the city for the entrance sign on Sunnywood Lane. The city will match what we spend on the sign for labor and materials, and will also match "sweat equity" at a reasonable rate, up to a total of $2500. There is a September 15 deadline to apply for the grant.

To be eligible for the grant, there are several requirements we must meet. We meet most of the requirements already. Remaining requirements are (1) we must create and publish bylaws, and (2) we must elect organization officers as specified in the bylaws. Carolyn Taylor has a background in law and has agreed to assist us in meeting these requirements. Dennis Carter is assisting her.

Carolyn also suggested that, since we are and always have operated as a non-profit community organization, we should file the proper documents to receive 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status. She advised that we meet all the requirements, that it is simply a matter of preparing and filing the right documents, and that there are numerous benefits to be gained. She has agreed to guide us through that procedure.

Sardis Woods resident and professional brickmason Allen Smith will build our new sign at the Sunnywood entrance. Suzanne Butler, Susan & John Sullivan, and Rod Turnham have volunteered to work with Allen and Dave on the design for this sign.

Judy has obtained a copy of the articles of incorporation for a non-profit corporation named "Sardis Area Homeowners Association, Inc". It is unclear from this document whether the organization's scope includes Sardis Woods. Carolyn has agreed to help investigate.

A consensus agreement was reached to send a letter from the Sardis Woods Neighborhood Association to the Charlotte city council in support of the development and publication of a landlords database. If the measure under consideration by the city council is adopted, landlords would be required to register with the city, and their contact information would be made available to neighborhood organizations. This would make it much easier to contact absentee landlords regarding issues with their property and/or tenants.

Ideas for activities and attractions include:

A tentative date of Saturday, October 10 was set to have a neighborhood social event. MANY volunteers will be needed to plan and present the event, and ALL Sardis Woods residents are urged to get involved! Contact Judy to volunteer your ideas and assistance.

A block captain is needed for Summerwood Lane.

Our next block captains meeting is planned for Sunday, August 10 at 4:00 pm.
